CHANNEL your inner pirate on board the South Passage for a day as she graces the waters of Pumicestone Passage.

South Passage, a 100ft, gaff-rigged schooner, is based on the designs of the 19th century pilot schooners that operated off the east cost of America.

The Sail Training Association of Queensland's tall ship was designed and built in Queensland specifically as a sail training vessel for youth.

Launched in 1993, she has since taken more than 400,000 young people to sea for an Adventure Under Sail anywhere from Cairns to Sydney.

Now she is offering locals the chance to experience the wind in her sails.

South Passage will explore the northern regions of Moreton Bay with the Australian Navy Cadets from TS Koopa on May 6, before inviting the public on board for a day at sea on the Sunday.

Office manager Alisen Rudkin said passengers would have the chance to hoist the sails, take the helm or just sit back and enjoy.

"The experience starts as soon as you step on board and see and feel how traditional this tall ship is,” she said.

"The skipper doesn't waste any time before the sails are hoisted the traditional way - not a winch in sight.”

In her 20 years volunteering on board the ship, watch leader Rosemary Miller has gained many wonderful memories.

"Our volunteers are all instructed similarly in the 'South Passage way' of doing things aboard the vessel, and over time they have become a big family,” she said.

"We all come away with powerful memories of special trips and many exciting stories to recount to friends and family.”

South Passage will be moored at Bongaree Jetty overnight on the Saturday, so head down and have a look at Queensland's own sail training tall ship.

Tickets are $87 for adults and $45 for students under 18 years.
